The Providence stage welcomed the famous show “Father of the Bride” this fall. The play’s 68-year-long legacy, complete with two major motion pictures, continued with Providence’s production of the celebrated comedy. From November 30 to December 4, Providence students Camille Spencer, Parker Claus, Eliza Lieberman and Nick Stathopoulos took on these famous roles, wearing the shoes of movie stars Spencer Tracy, Elizabeth Taylor, and Steve Martin. Based on Edward Streeter’s 1949 novel by the same name, “Father of the Bride” is a story of a father, Stanley Banks (Parker Claus), grousing through his daughter’s sudden engagement and wedding preparations. The play begins with the shocking announcement from Kay Banks (Camille Spencer) of her and Buckley’s (Nick Stathopoulos) soon-to-be nuptials. The news brings joy and excitement to all but the anxious and irritated father of the bride, Stanley Banks (Parker Claus.) Banks takes it upon himself to criticize, stress, and fuss over the budget, the decorations and all of the problems. This high school cast of actors and the crew working the lights and sound rehearsed for months before the premiere, and their work didn’t end until the curtin dropped on December 4. What the audience saw on stage during the show’s run came from more than just the cast. The unseen crew that worked offstage ensured that the set pieces moved, the lights hit their targets, and the costumes looked just right. Additionally, the tech theater students built the set, which was an entire living room and working stairs.
